Special Guest; Nigel Grainge...

Sad news to report; Friend of the show, Nigel Grainge has passed June 2017 at his home in Santa Monica, CA. Nigel began his music career in the 1970s and went on to sign and develop a wide range of artists from Steve Miller Band, 10cc, Eddy Grant, Graham Parker & The Rumour, to Sinead O'Connor, The Boomtown Rats, Thin Lizzy, The Waterboys, and World Party among many others. I have known Nigel for over twenty-five years. We first met in London and I would see him around town at gigs. We reconnected many years later in LA when I was recommended by the Hotel Figuroa to DJ his 60th birthday party. After some polite introduction over the phone, we quickly realized, “What? Blimey, it’s you!!!” Music was SO very important to Nigel, which lucky for me meant swapping music and getting together often over lunch to talk about the flow of the night. I later DJ’d his wedding to Merle as well, which again consisted of more hanging out and talking music. I will miss our lunch’s and Amoeba (store in LA) Records runs to scour the bins. He will be sadly missed for his opinion, knowledge and laughter.

Farewell ol’ friend.

Nigel was my first guest on INDIE1031. Since my show is based on relevant music/events from that week in time, I asked Nigel to come on because it was Thin Lizzy/Phil Lynott’s birthday (Aug 20th) that week. I sent Nigel my list of researched music from that week and he really got into it, looking through his chart books and finding his own faves. And more importantly, that very week in 1978 was when Nigel’s label, Ensign debuted with their very first single, “Hey St. Peter” by Flash & The Pan. It was meant to be (but I think, there was probably 52 weeks a year that had a direct connection with the career of Nigel Grainge)

• Kickin' off with “Last Train To San Fernando” by Johnny Duncan & The Blue Grass Boys. Classic tracks from Quicksilver Messenger Service, Moby Grape, and Van Morrison. #1 records from The Spinners. Birthday celebrations with Phil Lynott and David Freiberg. Ensign Recording acts, Flash & The Pan, Boomtown Rats, World Party and an exclusive demo from Sinéad O'Conner. Plus new music from The Middle East and Yacht.

> The Best Tracks of 2011 Curated by Special Guest Nigel Grainge At the end of every year, Nigel would always send his friends via email his choices for the Best tracks of the year. It was ALWAYS full of surprises and obscurities (no LPs qualified). I can vouch for every single person, that there were many tracks and artists that you had never ever heard of (let alone heard). He had an insatiable thirst for new music and always wanted to share. So I asked him to come on my show Jan 1st 2012 and share his list. PS this was many months BEFORE Gotye’s hit took off.

• Kickin' off with “I Walked Alone” by Yacht. Rockin’ & Funky tunes from Jon Fratelli, Beirut, Blind Pilot, Wretch 32 ft. L, Lana Del Rey, Gotye ft. Kimbra, The Middle East, Jamie Woon, Foe. From Sons of Anarchy, Katey Sagal with the Forest Rangers & Blake Mills cover Billie Holiday. Remixes from Creep ft. Nina Sky, & Two Door Cinema Club. The LIVE from the streets of Bristol DubFX ft. Mr. Woodnote & Flower Fairy.

< #025-A Special Guest; A&R Legend Nigel Grainge

This was Nigel’s second appearance on the show where he helped pick the play list and related stories of signing The Boomtown Rats and meeting Phil Spector. Nigel helped picked the playlist from the events/birthdays and gigs from that week in time. He simply had one of the best EARS in the business.

• Kickin' off with “Country Girl” by The Johnny Otis Show. Rockin' tracks from Bob Dylan, The Ronettes, Prince Buster, the Boomtown Rats, The Guess Who, Steve Cropper & Albert King. Birthday celebrations for Phil Spector, Pop Staples, Patti Smith, Andy Summers from The Police, & Monkees’ Davey Jones & Mike Nesmith. #1 records from The Beatles. The debut from Big Joe Turner. The last Paul McCartney & Wings show with the Rockestra Theme LIVE. And The SONIC HISTORY LESSON with the debut broadcast of Top of The Pops in 1964.
